(see post below if you are wondering where this comes in . . .)
i am surely not without sin in respect to co-existing with pets, nor did i ever claim to be. but no single cat or dog i ever had ever came close to such danger and tragedy, let alone several of them. luck? probably some. concerted effort on my part and that of my family? certainly.
and on the subject of "judging", these phrases are in the christian bible, too:
# 1Cor. 6:2-3 Do you not know that the saints [the saved] will judge the world? And if you are to judge the world, are you not competent to judge trivial cases? Do you not know that we will judge angels? How much more the things of this life!
# Prov. 3:21 My son, preserve sound judgment and discernment, do not let them out of your sight;
# John 7:24 Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment. (NB: while i no longer advocate debalconization or immurement, i still feel my judgment--as a peer [cat owner and human]--was valid).
# Jer. 22:3 Thus saith the LORD; Execute ye judgment and righteousness...
having had more than one cat (like kim), i can truly say i've learned more than a little about how they think and where they hide (or can get into and not out of). and because the lid is shut or the door is closed or whatever does NOT mean the kitty is not in there; the lid or door was not always closed, no matter what you think.
yes, of course we irate kitty-bloggers realized from the git-go that kitties are endowed with "amazing spirit and power"; from what i construe by considering the responses of the cat blogosphere folk is that we collectively decried the fact that poor bess had to live through such a horrible experience to demonstrate it, and that the story was presented in a light manner, rather than as a cautionary tale.
oh, and by the bye, ed, nitro and xing lu are "The MEOWERS from Missouri".

Billy has an amazing ability to open doors and become invisible when a forbidden door is opened by a human. I cannot tell you how many times I have found him in the basement or forbidden bedroom and have just scratched my head. There is something to be said for taking a "cat head" count periodically - especially when there are strangers in the house. What it boils down to for us is this- we're not perfect, we do the best we can, and we would never make "light" of a tragic situation, no matter the outcome. We think that woman should have just kept her story to herself.
Of course we have all made mistakes, no one is purrfect, and we learn by our mistakes, but it doesn't alter the fact that a neighbour heard Bess cry. The owner lives in that house. Can she honestly expect people to believe she didn't hear her? She must have been going frantic shut in there.
If I can't find Eric or Flynn, I know they can only be in the garden, but that doesn't stop me looking everywhere for them. Can you believe I even look in the freezer even though I know I haven't been to it since I last saw them. (They are usually right back in under the hedge watching me look for them.)
think what gets me is that this woman doesn't even seem sorry to have done something. You know to get forgiveness you first have to ask for it. I'm not the one who needs to give it to her either--it's her cat.
I think what everyone found so offensive is not what happened but the fact that the person didn't seem to get that what she was doing was unacceptable. One often sounds judgmental when teaching children right from wrong. I think in this case we do sound judgmental but how else will this woman ever get that cats are living sentient beings too?
(Second try as too many typos on the first!)
God gets 'em ALL in the end.
Yeah , I love that Old Testament vengeance stuff.....
Hey everyone,
I completely understand the anger that we feel when hearing about the endangerment of a beloved, innocent, sweet animal such as a cat. The way that Ms. Murphy expressed herself riled us all up even more, because how dare someone show an attitude of levity when their cat has become starved to the point of brain damage and blindness?
Perhaps we should consider that her levity, though inappropriate, may be a defense mechanism. (I'm working my way to a Masters degree in Mental Health, so everyone else is welcome to chime in with their knowledge). It's a very basic one, but her denial of the seriousness of the situation - and her attempts to reconstruct her reality to make it seem less serious - may be indications that she is hiding deeper pain over what happened than she may let on. Yes, she could be an evil person just desiring justification and validation, but it's her problem if she mistakes kindness for weakness - not ours.
I may be wrong, but I may be right.
I would also like to respectfully argue about the use of the Bible about judgement. I respect this book, but factual historical evidence shows that it has been often edited by persons in power so that it provides a message that suits their agenda. Examples include the King James VERSION of the Bible and what happened at the council of Niceae in 325 AD. There's a lot more evidence, but I won't launch into that at this point because I understand that with something like this, many of us will agree to disagree.
I hope that I've said what I meant to say, because I'm a little rushed right now. I applaud everyone's empathy for poor Bess, but I think we can be more helpful to her if we offer her owner our own experiences as wisdom so that she won't make this mistake (or others like it) again.
Love and peace to everyone,
Tracy
I has said my piece... but more and more I ma thinking about it and this woman and just the general feel I get in my tummy... I think she may have the condition "something by proxy"... in a weird kind of way.. that they must have drama in their lives.. ohh I am not thinking about this.. this horrible person does not deserve it..
As for judging..
Did she not put her story out there TO BE JUDGED?! like umm DUH?
